Artistry & Work Ethic

If you want to be successful as an artist, you must learn to have crazy work ethic. You have to be focused, disciplined, a hard worker, and willing to get your hands dirty! There is no quick fix to success! The ones who get to the top have a crazy work ethic. A simple google search of those people you admire will show you all they had to go through to get to where they are now. I hear, all too often, from artists “they aren’t even that talented, how did they get there?”

As a coach, one of the hardest things to do is to guide an artist to become who they feel they are meant to be without projecting on them what I see for them.  It is vital that they, through guidance, discover who they are, be it style, music, personality, showmanship, etc..  You see, in a world full of critics and opinion leaders, I know that they will get enough “advice” out there. The last thing they need is me throwing my two cents into the barrel of “noise.”

New Blog! “The Dreaded Plan B”

As an artist, I have often been approached with this question: if music didn’t pan out, what was your plan B?  To which I would reply: I have no plan B.  I know this will make many of you gasp in shock, but let me explain.  For me, not doing music was never an option.  Having a plan B meant investing time in something besides music, and I wasn’t willing to do that.  There’s a mindset that comes with having a Plan B that I wanted to stay far away from.

In a world where we’re increasingly used to instant results, it’s tempting to look for shortcuts among the skills that require time and effort to refine, such as the arts.  However, attempting to use shortcuts leads to the creation of unrealistic goals and disappointment.  As a voice coach, I have run into many problems while working with various artists (heck, many of the problems I have experienced myself as an artist) and the desire for instant results is one of the biggest.
