It is so interesting to me that so many people have the idea that you need to be “naturally talented” in order to venture into the world of singing. Now I am not going to say that it hurts to have this innate ability to hear some notes and repeat them back, but I would argue there is an even more important factor that outweighs this in determining whether or not someone becomes a professional “grade A” singer. So what is this other factor you ask… well I will tell you. It is one’s drive! When I meet someone for the first time, I look to see how hungry this person is to be a singer. If they are talented and have no goals or real burning passion then they can get some stuff accomplished but they will not be a match for someone who is burning to do this as a career. What the outside world does not always see is that it takes some serious dedication and hard work to be a professional artist. There seems to be some illusion that if you can sing “naturally” than you will be a rock star. This, my friends, is the farthest thing from truth. Just ask any industry professional.
New Blog from Studio Owner, Patrice Peris: Debunking the myth that you need to be “naturally talented” in order to become a singer
So let’s break this down a bit. You may wonder why I couldn’t care less if someone comes to me with “natural talent” and can sing amazing to start. It comes down to drive which, to me, is a lot harder to teach someone than how to breath correctly or shape their mouth to get the right resonance. You see the thing, is talent is awesome and needed but I know that someone driven will do what it takes to practice enough to get their vocals to where they need to be. It may take this person some time but they will be willing to put in the practice to make it happen. They can also use that drive when it comes to the business side of things which is crucial in this industry. So if you really want to be a singer but you feel like you’re not what others may call “naturally talented,” do not fear. If you can buckle down and get your hands dirty, give me a ring, I’d love to work with you!
