That Which You Fear Is What You Create

If you have worked with me before, then you have most likely heard me say this. But for those of you that have not worked with me yet or for those of you that need to hear it again, I have this saying, “that which you fear, is what you create.”
A lot of times people will fear hitting high notes and in their fear of hitting the high note, they don’t hit the high note. What happens is, they get so in their head and end up stopping themselves.

This concept not only applies to your voice but all other parts of the music industry as well. A lot of people fear that they are not good enough and therefore do not put themselves in a position to work with other people. For example, a songwriter may not reach out to write with another songwriter because they have worked with amazing writers in the past. Or an artist may be afraid to reach out to a producer because they have amazing credentials and the artist feels they are not good enough to work with them.
I have fallen victim to these same thoughts but over the years, I have been able to switch my way of thinking. I would tell myself, “I am not going to fear it, I am just going to do it.” And from that way of thinking, so many amazing things have happened. I believe that we learn and grow the most when we are attacking our fears.

I would encourage you to go after the things that scare you. I will say, it is important to study and learn about what you are interested in so that you can prepare as much as you can but in the end, you just have to do. You could sit there and continue to study and study and study but the studying and learning without the doing will never benefit you. For me, it is always a combination of the two worlds. You have to be learning and you also have to be doing because that is how you are ultimately going to better yourself.
In the process of doing, you may experience failures. That’s ok! Or you may not get the absolute best product or result. But I don’t consider it a failure if you have learned something or got something out of the experience.

So, it’s time! Start attacking the fears! Write them down and then go after them!
