What I’ve Learned from Running a Business

What I’ve learned from running a business is that you could do all of the right things and people will still find fault in you and still not like you. You could give people all of the tools in the world and they will still not do what they need to do to make things happen. I have learned that being kind and persistent is crucial.
You may be asking, why is she writing a blog about running a business when this is a blog to help artists? Well, at the end of the day, you as an artist are a business. And the same things will apply to you.
You could do all of the right things and people will still not like you. You could have everything to offer and people will still not see it. You are going to deal with all kinds of people and the best thing you can do is be kind and persistent towards your goals.
You have to navigate your way through the waters and understand that you can learn and grow and get better each step of the way. It doesn’t mean that you will always be perfect. At times I know I have had to strengthen things and I am always hungry to learn. I want to be the best that I can possibly be for my artists. I give what I have at that moment but I keep pushing myself towards more. This is the same model that we have to adapt to as artists. You can give an audience everything you have at that moment during a performance while still understanding that you want to grow to more and that doesn’t make that performance bad or lesser. It was the best at that time.
We could keep waiting until we are the greatest versions of ourselves but the greatest way to learn is by doing.
The greatest gift and joy of running a business has been to understand how to grow and evolve and be proud of the different things I’ve been able to accomplish while still pushing myself towards greater achievements.
Another gift of running a business has been being able to help others. I believe that this is also a huge part of being an artist. Just as I am here to service artists and give them my best, as artists we are there to serve others. We are there to entertain and help others feel.
If you can apply these ideas to your journey as an artist, I think you will be in a much better position.
